Installation of Eave flashing / Drip Edge Flashing

Here are some steps for properly installing eave flashing or drip edge flashing:

It is crucial to introduce the eaves flashing before you begin to lay down the roof shingles.

1. Measure and Cut the Flashing:

Cut and place the flashing length to cover the entire length of eave while leaving room for joint movement. Flashing should overhang the gutter and go into the gutter and out over the fascia board, this should be done at least 2 inches.

2. Prepare the Roof Edge:

Place the flashing at the back edge with the bottom hook under the roof underlayment and the top hook extending over the sheathing. Roofing nails should be used in this case and should be about eight to twelve inches apart. This means that there must be no structures overhanging on one another.

3. Position the Flashing:

At joints overlaid pieces should be at least 4 inches apart from each other. Ensure that water will pass over the overlapped joint and not to pass into it. Use roofing cement to seal the joints we have just identified.

4. Secure the Flashing:

On the outside and inside corners of the wall, you need to cut and bend the flashing as illustrated above. They should not just put pieces on top of each other, straight. This makes sure the weather seal is done properly.

5. Overlap the Flashing:

At the outer edge of the flashing, protruding out from the fascia board edge by about one to two inches is advisable. It is a formation that directs water into the gutter.

6. Seal the Edges:

The top outer edge should be sealed squarely using the roofing cement to avoid allowing water to seep behind the flashing.

7. Check Alignment:

Last but not the least; examine the roof edges where flashing is done to see if there are any hole or opening created by the rainwater. Then take some roofing cement and close all the cracks and openings which can cause leaks.

Ensure that there are no gaps when placing the flashing to ensure that the whole eave is covered avoiding leaking.
